Budget Travel Tips

I believe these first two weeks I have focused more on the pre-planning of social gathers, like how to make extra money for the social event budget. today I wanted to share ideas on how to travel to family gatherings, weddings, etc. frugally.

Having a background in hotels, my first suggestion is when traveling try to always stay under the same “umbrella” of hotels.By doing this consistently you have the opportunity to earn points to redeem for free night stays later. My favorite hotel brand is IHG. They have nine brands in their family, spanning 4,900 hotels in nearly 100 territories and countries. IHG Rewards Club offers you more ways to redeem your points than any other hotel loyalty program.  The points you earn also never expire. As a member you can redeem when you want, for what you want, with no blackout dates.

Two of the best blog resources I have found on how to earn points/travel miles faster to travel for free or pretty dang close are Million Mile Secrets and The Points Guy.

Million Mile Secrets shows readers how they can acquire airline miles and hotel points, and travel comfortably to see the world, for a fraction of what they would otherwise pay for such travels. Daraius, the blog creator and former CPA, uses his ability to interpret complicated airline rules and marketing promotions to make the most of airline, hotel, and rental car promotions. Then presents the information in a helpful way that anyone can understand. (Because not everyone can understand technical, fine print jargon)

The Points Guy is Brian Kelly. He has become a leader and influencer in the industry of points, miles and travel in general. He shares his knowledge and insight with readers from his time as a Wall Street road warrior traveling the globe for up to six months a year.

If you are someone that travels a lot for work but end up not using all of your points or don’t intend to use them all, gifting travel points is a great option for friends and family. It doesn’t cost you extra and it gives them the opportunity to take a vacation or see a long distance friend/family member.
